Blamed

Blamed is a sculptural ceramic vessel that confronts the historical persecution of women accused of witchcraft. A handwoven tapestry is framed within a small window, its warp made from exposed black leather cord…evoking both the structure of weaving and the iron bars of a cell. Embedded in the clay are fragments of language…gossip, hung, persecuted, and the familiar phrase give us the goss, love…linking the object to both medieval witch trials and contemporary culture’s casual cruelties. Glazed in gold and silver, Blamed honours the sturdiness and silenced voices of women who were both feared and desired, scapegoated and mythologised.
